Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album is often called one of the best rock albums of all time and, well, I’d have to agree. It was a pleasure to frame this autographed album cover for a great client, Dan. We’ve done a lot of framing for Dan and now he just sort of lets me run with the matting designs. By now he must have a wall full of framed albums, each with a little different twist in the matting design to accent the piece being framed. We’ve keep the frame the same over the years and even made sure that the size is the same to the 1/16″.
This one is a simple replication of the album art cut into the mat. The tricky part was piecing in acid free papers to mimic the rainbow side of the prism. Not particularly difficult but a bit on the time consuming side! After I took the photo, I thought that the white line looked a little too big, so I went back and narrowed that up a little. If we are working on a music-related framing job, I like to listen to the music in the shop while we are creating the project. It helps with creativity and sometimes exposes us to new music or something we haven’t heard in a long while. By the way, these creative designs are not super expensive–starting at $10 and going up to $75, depending on the time involved. This one was around $40 on top of the framing job.
We always use a glass with a UV coating which helps keep the artwork from fading–the signatures can be especially vulnerable because of the pens used are not always the best. (Sharpies are terrible, but that’s another post) We create something called a “sink mat” which is a fancy term for making using acid free materials instead of nasty tapes or glues. Everything is finished off on site at our little shop in Eagan, MN and ready to hang–we even include a hook so you can hang it up right away and start enjoying it. We serve clients all over the St. Paul and Minneapolis area but especially in Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville, Mendota Heights and Rosemount. Give us a call or just stop in.
